Great Ethiopian Run is an independent non-governmental organization (NGO) (as well as ActionAid) operating in Ethiopia since 2001 with the mission of staging mass-participation athletic competitions in Ethiopia. In recent years Great Ethiopian Run focus has been on taking mass-participation races to all corners of Ethiopia; developing capacity in the office and event teams which are staffed by Ethiopians; and working with sponsors on a range of publicity campaigns.
Since its inception in 2001 Great Ethiopian Run has staged over 60 races in different parts of Ethiopia.

In the 11th edition of the International 10km race 36,000 participants were registered and many more unofficial participants joining in, an estimated total of around 38,000 took part in the race, many walking round the 10km course which in 2011 used a new route to cater for the larger numbers. A total of over 350 international participants took part in the race.
The official fundraising campaign in 2011, “I AM RUNNING FOR A CHILD” raised over 1million birr for the two beneficiary charities Kebebe Tsehay and Kechene institutional cares. In 2010, a total of 808,000birr was raised and each year the money raised for charity is increasing showing that participants are getting familiar with running for a good cause.
Ethiopia is truly a land of contrasts and extremes, a land of remote and wild places. Some of the highest (and most stunning) places on the African continent are found in Ethiopia, including the Simien Mountains, the rock-hewn churches in Lalibela, other ancient sites in Tigray, not to mention other national parks and mountain and lakeside areas in the south of the country.
Sally Gunnell, one of Britain’s favourite Olympic champions, took on the Great Ethiopian Run with ActionAid and is asking runners to get on their marks and join her on the 11th edition of the International 10km:
I am really excited about taking part in Africa’s biggest race later this year. It’s going to be a fantastic opportunity to run alongside some amazing people in a beautiful country and get the chance to see the great work ActionAid is doing to help women and communities out of poverty. I urge all runners to take up the challenge and help run poverty into the ground.
The Great Ethiopian Run isn’t your usual 10K run as it takes place half-way across the world in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital. With 33,000 participants it is Africa’s biggest road race and at an altitude of 7,600 feet in hot Ethiopian temperatures it is a challenge for experienced runners and newcomers alike.
ActionAid need some brave people to compete in Africa’s largest road race, to raise money for ActionAid’s work and to experience Ethiopia like never before. So get on your marks. Get set and sign up for the Great Ethiopian Run!
